Slaters, also known as woodlice, are multi-legged, multi-segmented bugs that scavenge on decomposing plant material around the garden.
Slaters or woodlice are not usually regarded as a pest. They live in leaf litter and amongst decaying wood and the cracks and crevices between stones. However, on occasions when conditions have been favourable to breeding they can boom to large numbers.
Slaters can sometimes be found in huge numbers in vegetable patches. Also as they grow they need to find larger spaces to live in and can on mass wander into buildings seeking new homes.
