Oxtongue and similar species catsear, hawksbeard, dandelion, hawkbit and oxtongue, are common weeds of New Zealand gardens. They are often found in lawns, wasteland, pasture and roadsides.
Oxtongue is included in a group of dandelion like weeds with rosettes of leaves close to the ground and branched leafy flower stalks crowned with clusters of yellow dandelion like flowers. Oxtongue has leaves with wavy edges but not lobbed. The leaves have raised spots with bristles making them rough; like an ox's tongue.
