Hawksbeard, and similar species catsear, dandelion, hawkbit and oxtongue, are common weeds of New Zealand gardens. They are often found in lawns, wasteland, pasture and roadsides.

Identify the problem
Hawksbeard is included in a group of dandelion like weeds with rosettes of leaves close to the ground and branched leafy flower stalks crowned with clusters of yellow dandelion like flowers.
How to solve the problem
In Lawns
- Apply the selective herbicide LawnPro Turfclean Ultra, LawnPro Turfclean or Turfclean & Green. This will effectively control hawksbeard but will leave lawn grasses unaffected. Alternatively hawksbeard can be spot sprayed with Weed Weapon Rapid Action or painted with Weed Weapon Invade Gel.
- For best results use in Spring and Autumn when weeds and turf are growing.
In Garden Beds

There are five similar species with dandelion like flower heads:
- Dandelions have a single large flowerhead at the end of a short hollow stem which exudes white sap when cut.
- Hawksbeard has smaller flowerheads on taller, leafy, branched stems.
- Hawkbit are large and are at the top of solid, leafless, unbranched stems.
- Catsear has tall little branched, leafless stems.
- Oxtongue has tall, stiff, bristled hairy stems and leaves.
- Hawkbeard are weeds in the Genus Crepis
