Blister beetles are are beetles of the family Meloidae, and false blister beetles are lax beetles (pictured). Both produce the chemical defense chemical cantharidin, which blisters the skin.
The family Meloidae includes many different species. Many are colourflul, announcing their defensive chemical toxicity. Lax beetles are long, narow brown beetles with dark spots.
