As animal and plant pest experts, we are invested in the guardianship of our natural environment, so that it remains healthy for generations to come. Every year over 25 million native birds are killed by introduced predators in New Zealand and more and more invasive weed species are smothering native plants across Oceania. It’s our mission to put a halt to the damage and protect our natural habitats so that native species can flourish.
We have the skills, expertise, partnerships and products to help us in our roles as guardians protecting the biodiversity of our natural world. And here’s the best bit – You can make a real difference too. Whether that’s just in the day-to-day work you carry out in your home and garden, or getting behind activities in your local community, any improvements are a good thing and every bit counts.
Kiwicare produces a wide range of innovative and effective products to help control invasive weeds, predators like rats and mice and pests like armyworm and more. We partner with government agencies like the Department of Conservation, local councils, commercial organizations, and biodiversity groups. Our partners include:
From backyard to bush we do it all. Kiwicare has dedicated years to hands-on fieldwork and extensive laboratory research, crafting solutions to combat the most formidable plant and pest problems. Whether collaborating with government agencies to combat invasive weeds and predators, supporting biodiversity groups or helping everyday people deal with problems in their own backyard, we've successfully tackled it all. Our commitment to helping preserve natural balance remains unwavering.
Every night in New Zealand approximately 68,000 native birds are killed by introduced predators like rats and mice. Rodents are prolific breeders that quickly spread from property-to-property and then out into native bush as their populations boom. Both rats and mice prey on eggs and baby birds, they destroy native plants and compete with birds for food sources – And unfortunately, our birds are defenceless against them. Controlling rats and mice in your home and garden and preventing their rampant spread actually plays a significant role in protecting our birds. Not to mention the fact you’re also protecting yourself from the spread of disease and your property from damage to electrical wires and pipes. Controlling rodents is a win-win situation for both you and the environment. Follow the link below for more details on the Predator Free 2050 initiative and practical tips and advice for dealing with rodents.
Dealing with weeds in your garden before they go to seed for example means that you’re not only getting a great looking garden, but you’re preventing the spread of weeds to nearby properties and natural habitats. When we refer to weeds, we’re not just talking about dandelions and broadleaf weeds (although controlling them is great too). It can be things like Old Man’s Beard which at face value looks pretty but smothers trees and shrubs with its vines and has seeds that are dispersed easily into natural habitats by the wind, or Banana Passionfruit, which is equally destructive with its creeping vines and seeds that are spread far and wide by birds. Controlling weeds in your backyard, prevents them from spreading out into nature.
